The Project Management Cycle

This course introduces the concept of managing a project using a cyclical approach. Development project management consists of six phases;

initiating, planning, implementing, monitoring, adapting and closing.

It is an integrated approach that provides for a continuous learning process; they help keep the project on track to deliver its outcomes on time, on budget and under the expectations of the donor and project beneficiaries. The students will learn how the project cycle is an opportunity that gives rise to adjustments in the project and contribute to learning.

Complex Problems

Today's development projects are more complex and require the participation of a diverse group of stakeholders, project managers need to coordinate between the needs of the many stakeholders. Coordinate and integrate the work of different specialists from different fields, and need to use different approaches to solve the complex problems.

Development projects need to be carefully designed taking in consideration the input from different stakeholders, project budgets need to be managed, schedules monitored, and outcomes evaluated. This complex project environment requires appropriate project management skills.
